Ways to Help Amherst, MA, College Students Cope with Anxiety

College students anxiety free after having therapy with Kimberly Schildbach Therapy in Amherst, MA.

College can be a time of great change and stress for students, and anxiety is a common problem. There are many things that can help college students cope with anxiety, including:

  • Seeking professional help. If your anxiety is severe or interfering with your ability to function, it's important to seek professional help. A therapist can teach you coping skills.  Please don't wait for anxiety to be extreme or debilitating to seek help!

  • If you can't seek professional help, try talking to a trusted friend or family member. Sometimes just talking about your anxiety can help you feel better. If you have a close friend or family member who you trust, talking to them about your anxiety can be a great way to get support.  Be aware that sometimes we can wear out our friends and family.  Most of them are dealing with their own struggles!

  • Joining a support group. Reach out to the UMass Amherst Center for Counseling and Psychological Help.  There are many support groups available for college students with anxiety. These groups can provide a safe space to share your experiences and learn from others who are going through the same thing.

  • Practicing self-care. There are many things you can do to take care of yourself and reduce your anxiety levels. These include eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, getting enough sleep, and avoiding caffeine and alcohol.  Enjoy the beauty of Western MA and get out there for a walk!

  • Learning relaxation techniques. There are many relaxation techniques that can help reduce anxiety, such as deep breathing, meditation, and yoga. Amherst, MA, has many yoga studios to choose from.

  • Making time for fun and relaxation. It's important to make time for activities that you enjoy and that help you relax. This could include spending time with friends, listening to music, reading, or watching a movie.

  • Setting realistic expectations. It's important to set realistic expectations for yourself in college. Don't try to do too much at once, and don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

  • Taking breaks when you need them. If you're feeling overwhelmed, it's important to take a break. Go for a walk, listen to music, or do something else that you enjoy. Even a short break can help rejuvenate you and keep anxious thoughts at bay.

  • Remembering that you're not alone. Anxiety is a common problem, and there are many people who can help you. If you're struggling with anxiety, don't be afraid to reach out for help.
